I was just turned on to this concept and had to share it with you. Apparently there is over 24 Billion dollars in unclaimed money that States are holding until the rightful owner, well, claims it.
This type of money consists of unclaimed payroll checks, utility deposits, bank and escrow accounts, old CDs, etc. Many times, these special accounts or deposits can get lost or forgotten when you are in the middle of a big move. Plus, it's not like companies are going to send you a notice to come pick up your money. So, after a while, they turn it over to the State as personal property. Simply go to www.unclaimed.org and click on the Owner Section. Be sure to search every state in which you lived...even Canada.
I decided to try it and clicked on Texas and California. Nothing came up in California. But, it turns out that there are TWO unclaimed checks from my high school summer job in Texas, Wet-n-Wild (which is now called Hurricane Harbor if you can imagine). Yes, I was a life guard. Laugh all you want, but I was in great shape and had a tan only George Hamilton could love. Oh yeah, and I saved three people from drowning...that's right, it's all coming back to me now.
I guess I didn't go back for my last two weeks of work which totaled (now here is the funny part) $123.21. But hey, $123 is $123! I can't believe I'm claiming unclaimed money!
Check it out for your self and let me know if you found money too!
